Ambition has but one reward for all: A little power, a little transient fame; A grave to rest in, and a fading name!

This last one is my favorite for entirely personal reasons. As my friends know I had a friend called Linda, she died a few years ago. Like me she LOVED animals, and apparently, so did the Linda who was buried here. Someone left a small rabbit toy at the grave, one of those mechanical ones that yip and do headflips. Personally I think those toys are super creepy, and this one is a clincher; the red beady eyes and the dirty, matted fur. It's like there's a demon rabbit watching over this Linda's grave, which makes me feel surprisingly satisfied.

Sakura kitsune

Was supposed to be a quick sketch for a screenprinting project.
Ended up not being as quick as I'd hoped and didn't use it either :P

Painted Dog

Same as the serval; a small sketch inspired by vintage photography of exotic ladies.

Zaynah; Kiss of the Whip

Started out as a speed paint, then people slowed me down so I took a bit more time.
I lost a lot of anatomical detail in the darkest shading, or that the hand is hovering above the shoulder rather than resting on it, but the gist should be there. Maybe I'll be lucky and the shading will also hide some of the many faults, but again, not going back to fix them. I just need to learn to up my pace and work with lighting and such to capture a mood.

I can't imagine you'd be entirely able to avoid a whipping when serving on a pirate ship, and Zaynah would be sure to learn the price of having a big mouth. Not that it's never worth paying, mind.

Zaynah, speedpaint.

Anyone know where my summer holiday went?
I do, into projects everyone else demanded of me. Commissions, homework, last minute artshow stuff. I'm so fed up with working for other people right now, I can't even make something for myself without feeling guilty.
So I said fuck it, I wanted to make something no-one asked for, no-one paid for and without any artistic merit of a subject matter no-one is waiting to see and without trying to learn something new.
Then at the end I realized I just tried out speed painting, which I had been intending to do. Goddamn sneaky learning stuff; my neighbors make being ignorant look so easy!

And I see lots of mistakes, but I'm not going back to fix them so no critique please.

Wisdom

Design for an etch, but it didn't work out. The lines were too thick to work well, I really prefer screenprinting to preserve lineweight and such.
Thought I'd show the digital sketch anyway.

Rabbits I have known; Woodruff and Cicely

Based on photos, but attempting to bring out their personality rather than just trying to capture their appearance.

Serval

Small pin-up of an African serval, little bigger than a postcard and inspired by vintage postcards of exotic African ladies. Scanning was a pain, the original is browner.
The original is for sale, contact me if you are interested.

Pigeons are awesome.

Al-mi'raj

The Al-mi'raj is a ferocious and bloodthirsty animal, all but it's own kind will flee at the sight of this terrible beast that feeds by hunting and goring any animal or person unlucky enough to cross it's path with it's large, spiraling horn. The Al-mi'raj can kill and devour creatures many times it's size, though it is suggested that it allows members of it's warren to feast on larger kills; rapidly and effortlessly decimating any carcass.
Al-mi'raj are fiercely territorial creatures and they will protect their warrens from intruders. New warrens are founded by adolescent Al-mi'raj leaving their home in search of their own territory. The Al-mi'raj mating season is from February to October. After an average of 30 days the doe gives birth to a litter of 4 to 12 kits, whose horns begin to grow at 14 days.
It is found that the only safe way to get rid of a wandering Al-mi'raj and to keep them from founding a warren near human settlements is to have a witch enchant and move the animal to a safe location.

For the Beasts of Yore portfolio.

Stag beetle

Like when I saw a real life shrew, I was insanely excited to have seen a real life stag beetle!
